Primavera P6 v15.2 PPM 64 Bit – “Faster Than Michael Phelps”
We have been using v15.2 of P6, both EPPM and PPM, for 2 weeks now. I personally use the client or PPM the most. This version has been upgraded to 64 bit, and I can really see the difference in speed.
We have over 10 years of projects in our P6 production database. Call me a hoarder, but I wanted those projects for reference if we needed them. It was literally getting to the point where I would watch it “paint” through the EPS or projects screen particularly when working from home on the VPN or even using the newer “Cloud Connect”. Both seemed close to unbearable, but since I love coffee, it was an easy excuse to take more espresso breaks, much to the Emerald team’s dismay. Now, with the 64 bit, it is instantaneous to move from the activities window to the projects window, which is wonderful.
The other thing we do a lot of when helping clients is to run our P6-QA Tool or the P6-Loader for them. In doing this we have to open their projects, and they can be very large.
We have some IT program clients with 1,000-2,000 activities in their schedules, and our turnaround client projects are in the 10,000+ range. I see a huge improvement in opening these in P6 v15.2, probably 100-200% I would guess. Scrolling through the activities window is much faster and much better to work in. I do not lose my place nearly as much now. Since I am a bit of a self-professed clicker, I tend to get impatient and scroll too quickly, but that is not a problem anymore.
The other area I see real speed improvement is in working with the Resource Dictionary. In our Sandbox we have thousands of resources, and it is a bit of a mess, so opening it used to take over 30 seconds to a minute. This is taking less than 10 seconds now and really not a frustration anymore.
Thanks to Oracle Primavera for this great improvement in P6 v15.2. Very much appreciated and our clients are going to love it. Can’t wait to test it on our Primavera In-A-Box solution using Oracle Engineered Systems; it is going to be fast, “faster than Michael Phelps”.
